Formation LIPI has a long history. After going through several phases of scientific activities since the 16th century until 1956, the Indonesian government established the Science Council of Indonesia (MIPI) through Law (UU) 6 Year 1956. Its task is to guide the development of science and technology and to give consideration to the government in terms of scientific wisdom. In 1962, the government established the National Research Affairs Department (DURENAS) and put MIPI with the additional task of building and nurturing several national research institutes. Until 1966, the status of DURENAS become National Research Institute (LEMRENAS). Since August 1967, the government abolished the LEMRENAS and MIPI Presidential Decree No. 128 of 1967. After that, the government pursuant to Decree No. MPRS 18 / B / 1967 forming LIPI and accommodating all the tasks LEMRENAS and MIPI into the institution. The main task is (1) to guide the development of science and technology rooted in Indonesia that can be utilized for the welfare of the people of Indonesia in particular and humanity in general; (2) search for scientific truth where scientific freedom, freedom of research and freedom of the pulpit recognized and guaranteed, as long as not contrary to Pancasila and the 1945 Constitution; (3) preparing for the establishment of Indonesian Academy of Sciences (since 1991, the principal task is then handled by the Ministry of Research and Technology with the Presidential Decree (Decree) No. 179 of 1991). As the development of national capacities in the field of science and technology, scientific institution in Indonesia has also experienced growth and development. In response, An overview and adjustment of the main tasks, functions and organizational structure of LIPI continued. Among other things, the establishment of Presidential Decree No. 128 of 1967 dated August 23, 1967 amended by Decree 43 of 1985. It is still further enhanced by Presidential Decree No. 1 of 1986 dated January 13, 1986 about the Indonesian Institute of Sciences. Lastly, improvements made by the adoption of Presidential Decree No. 103 of 2001.
